Overview

If you want to know more about Milling machine, please go ahead and read the following text.

Milling machine

Here is the overview of the Milling Machine through some short questions along with the answers instead of long text. This is because of developing your interest in the overview of the Milling Machine.

What is a Milling machine?

Milling machine is a machine tool that cuts the metal to get the required object as the job piece is fed against a rotating multi point cutter.

State some names of the parts of the milling machine.

Spindle, arbor, cutter, over arm, arbor support, elevating screw, knee, column, saddle, table.

Describe slot cutting operation in the Milling machine.

Spindle is connected with the arbor. The cutter is mounted on the arbor. Here, cutter has multiple cutting edges. These cutting tools are in inclined position. The width of the cutting tool is equal to the width of the slot.

You can’t make a slot of lower width than that of the cutting tool tips’ width.

First, you measure the job piece.

Then, you fix the job piece on the table within the vice.

Set the depth of cut given at a time.

Start the motor.

Move the job piece slowly towards the cutter. This is called forward stroke. During forward stroke, cutter removes the material from the job piece.

When the cutter cuts/ reaches at the end of the job piece, you have to move the job piece back. This is known as return stroke. During return stroke, cutter does not remove any material from the job piece. Hence, you can move the job piece back quickly. But during forward stroke, you have to move the job piece slowly.

Thus, you continue giving depth of cut.

In this way, you cut the slot.

Finally, check the surfaces and slots that you have made.

Name some operations performed on milling machine.

  • Plain milling operation
  • Side millng operation
  • Facing milling operation
  • Angular milling operation
  • Milling keyways, grooves and slots
  • Gear milling
  • Helical milling
  • Thread milling

What are the differences between the Lathe machine and the Milling machine?

The main differences between the Lathe machine and Milling machine are:

  1. There is a single point cutting tool in the Lathe machine whereas there is a multipoint cutting tool in the Milling machine.
  2. In Lathe machine, job piece rotates whereas in Milling machine, cutter rotates.

What is Down milling?

When the cutter rotates clockwise and the job piece is fed from right to left direction; it is called down milling. In other words, if the job piece is fed in the same direction in which direction the cutter rotates, it is called down milling.

What is Up milling?

When the cutter rotates anti clockwise and the job piece is fed against that direction; it is called Up milling. In other words, when the job piece is fed against the direction in which direction cutter rotates, it is called up milling.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Up milling?

Up milling or climb up milling, a conventional milling machine is generally used for rough surface cutting operation. In this operation, cutting forces act upward direction. This operation is generally used for brass, bronze and ferrous materials. Chip thickness starts at zero and increases towards the end of the cut.

Effective cooling is not required while cutting operation is going on.

Tool wear rate is more and hence tool longevity is less. It requires large amount of force for cutting operation. It gives poor surface finish. Power consumption is more than that of down milling.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Down milling?

Down milling or climb down milling is generally used for surface finishing operation. In this operation, cutting force act downward direction. This operation is generally used for aluminium and aluminium alloys.

Tool wear rate is less and hence tool longevity is more. It provides good surface finish. As cutting force acts downward direction, it needs less amount of force while cutting. Power consumption is less than that of up milling.

What is horizontal milling machine?

Horizontal milling machine is milling machine where spindle is connected with arbour that is horizontally placed and a multi point cutting tool is mounted around the arbour.

Slab cutting, form cutting can be performed on horizontal milling machine more effectively.

What is vertical milling machine?

Vertical milling machine is a milling machine where spindle is connected with arbor that is vertically placed and a multipoint cutting tool is mounted around the arbor.

Surfacing, drilling, boring, shaping can be performed in vertical milling machine more effectively.

What is universal milling machine?

Universal milling machine is a kind of milling machine where you can change the orientation of the spindle and arbor as per your requirement.

What are the differences between horizontal milling machines and vertical milling machines?

In horizontal milling machine, spindle and arbor is oriented horizontally whereas in vertical milling machine, spindle and arbor is oriented vertically.

Horizontal milling machine has shorter and thicker cutting tool whereas Vertical milling machine has long and thin cutting tool.

Horizontal milling machine can cut deeper and heavier than that of Vertical milling machine.

Why the coolant is used in machining?

Coolant is very much required in machining process because-

It helps in reducing temperature of the work piece while machining operation is going on.

Coolant lubricates the work zone and thus reduces the friction between the cutting tool tip and the chips coming out from the work piece. In this way, it enhances the life of the cutting tool.

Application of coolant removes the chips and the abrasive particles from the work zone.

Coolant protects the cutting tool from the corrosion.

Application of coolant helps people in handling it.

What is the coolant?

Coolant is a liquid or a gas that keeps the work zone warm and reduces the friction in the work zone. Soluble oils, straight oils, synthetic fluids, semi synthetic fluids act as coolant.

Where the milling machine is used?

Milling machine is used for the following purposes:

  1. To produce irregular surfaces
  2. Create flat surfaces
  3. To produce slots within an object
  4. For gear cutting.

The test- MCQ on the Milling Machine will enhance your knowledge. If you can’t answer any question, you read the text from the beginning where answers of the short questions are given. For any query, please write to me in the comment box. Thank you. Best wishes!

I love to educate myself. When I educate the little ones, I can educate myself in a better way. So I choose to educate all students with the help of advanced technology and that is by opening a site. Though by profession I am working in an MNC as a Mechanical Engineer, I love to educate from the beginning to build a career as a student.
