Overview

When one object is interacted with another object, the push or pull which is felt by the object is called Force. When you kick a ball, you are applying force on the ball.

Effect of Force

The position of the object doesn’t need to always change due to the applying force on it.

The objects may or may not move. The shape of the object may or may not change.  

Unit of Force

In the S.I unit, the unit of force is Newton. In C.G.S, the unit of force is Dyne. 1 newton = 105 dyne.

I Newton force means that it gives the acceleration of 1m/sec2 to an object of 1 kg mass.

Types of Force

There are different types of forces.  These are discussed in brief here.

Mechanical Force

When you throw a ball or push the door the force applied on the ball or the door is the mechanical force.

Muscular Force

When you do exercise, the push is felt by your muscles. It is an example of muscular force.

Frictional Force

When a ball rolls on the floor, after some time it stops and the velocity becomes zero. When the ball rolls on the floor, the surface of the ball and the floor interact with each other. The ball wants to move, but the surface wants the ball to stop. The ball and the surface both are applying force on each other. The force applied by the surface is the frictional force that opposes the motion.

Magnetic Force

If you take a material made of iron in front of a magnet, the iron material sticks to the magnet. Magnet pulls the iron material towards it. This pull is a magnetic force.

Elastic Force

When you pull a rubber band, its shape and size change. When you stop pulling it, it again regains its original shape and size. This pull is the elastic force.

Gravitational Force

When you throw a ball, it goes up a little. After that, it falls to the ground. Do you know why does it happen so? Why does the ball not move in the upward direction always? It is because the earth pulls all the objects towards it. This pull is the gravitational force.

Work

When the applying force causes the movement of the object or changes the position of the object or changes the shape and size of the object, it is said that work is done.

If you push the door and the door opens, you have done the work. When you push the door but can’t open it, you have not done any work.

Units of Work

The S.I unit of work is newton-meter or Joule. Work done is 1 joule means that when 1-newton force is applied on an object, the force causes 1-meter displacement of the object.  

In C.G.S, unit of work is erg. 1 joule = 107 erg.

1 erg= 1 dyne-cm.

Energy

The ability to do work is called energy. As long as we have energy, we can do work.

Units of Energy

In S.I, the unit of energy is the joule. In C.G.S, the unit of energy is a calorie.

Mechanical energy

Mechanical work is done with the help of mechanical energy. When a car moves, it requires mechanical energy. When the car runs, fuel is required because fuel energy is converted into mechanical energy.

There are two different types of mechanical energy. One is Kinetic energy and another one is potential energy.

Kinetic Energy:  

When the object moves, the energy possessed by the object is called kinetic energy.

Potential energy:

When the object rests, the energy possessed by the object is called potential energy.

Chemical energy:

Petrol or diesel is burnt inside the engine of the car. While burning, the fuel i.e. petrol or diesel reacts. This is called chemical energy. Chemical energy is spent in this reaction.

Electrical energy

Electrical appliances such as Fan, Television, Refrigerator, etc run with the help of electrical energy. When you switch on the fan, mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy.

Light energy

When you switch on the light, the energy spread by the lights is called light energy. In the case of lights, electrical energy is converted into light energy.

Wind energy

When a kite flies in the sky, it moves with the help of wind energy. Windmills are running because of wind energy.

Sound energy

When you switch on the calling bell, it rings. Here, electrical energy is converted into sound energy.

Heat energy

When you boil the water, water is converted into steam with the help of heat energy.

Solar energy

Instead of using heat from an electrical source or fuel, the heat from the sun is also used for cooking, for switching on the machines. Heat energy from the sun is termed Solar energy.
