If you want to know more details about Carpentry Shop, please go ahead and read the following text.
Overview of Carpentry Shop
The Carpentry shop is the place where we can manufacture the products that are made of wood.
In the Carpentry shop, we can perform the following activities:
- Plaining
- Sawing
- Shaping and fastening wood
- Chiseling
Under this experiment, students will make a cross-halving joint.
Tools used in Carpentry shop
Measuring tools
These tools are used for measuring the angles, lengths, widths, and diameters.
For example,
- Steel rule- Students will use the steel rule for measuring the length and width of an object.
- Bevel protector- Students will use this for measuring angles.
- Meter square- For measuring 450 angles, students will use this.
- Odd leg caliper and outside calipers- For measuring the diameters, students will use these calipers.
Marking tools
- Tri square- It is used for checking the straightness of the surfaces and also for marking the lines.
- Marking gauge- It is also used for marking and drawing lines.
Holding tools
- Carpentry vice- It is a job-holding device. It consists of two jaws-one movable and one fixed. The movable jaw moves with the help of a handle and screw.
- Clamps- For fixing the jobs, clamps are also used.
Cutting tools
- Saws- We use saws for cutting wood into pieces. We use the following types of saws in the carpentry shop:
- The rip saw– Students will use a rip saw for cutting the wood into pieces as per requirement. The blade of this rip saw is either straight or skew-backed. The cutting edge of the saw makes a steeper angle of approximately 600.
- Cross-cut saw– The shape of this saw is the same as a rip saw. It is used for cross-cutting of angle 450. The teeth are arranged in such a way that the saw kerf is wider than the blades that allow the blades to move freely without sticking. Kerf is the width of a material that is removed by a cutting process.
- Tenon or backsaw- For more accurate and fine work, we use a tenon or backsaw. Here, teeth are shaped like that of the cross-cut saw. There are very fine blades in this saw.
- Chisels- We use chisels for shaping the wood properly. Various blade widths from 3 mm to 50 mm are available in chisels.
- Firmer chisel- Students will make the cutting edges smooth by removing the unwanted material with the help of a firmer chisel. They can use it by hand pressure or by the mallet. The blade of it is flat. Their sloping face is at an angle of 150 to 520.
- Rasp file- For making the surface smooth, students will remove the unwanted material with the help of a rasp file.
Plaining tools

For making the surfaces plain, a metal jack plane is used.
Striking tools
For striking purposes, the following tools are used:
- Ball peen hammer
- Mallet
Boring tools
For making holes, boring tools are used. Example- Bit and drill.
Job in the Carpentry shop: making a cross-halving joint
Tools required:
- Carpentry vice
- Jackplane
- Try square
- Steel rule
- Rip saw
- Firmer chisel
- Mallet
Procedure
Plaining the surface
The raw material that is available to the students is of big lengths. So, they will cut this as per requirement. Then, they will make the upper and lower surfaces plain with the help of a metal jack plane.
Marking
As per the final job piece diagram, they will mark or sketch the job piece as per requirement. Students will use the try square, steel rule, pencil, and marking gauge for the purpose of marking.
Sawing

After marking, students will cut and remove some material from the middle portion with the help of a rip saw.
Chiseling
After removing the material from the middle portion, students will make the edges of the cutting portions smooth with the help of a chisel.
Finishing

Then, students will check the finishing of all the surfaces. Thus, they will make one piece.
In a similar way, they will make another piece.
After creating such two pieces, they will fit one part with the other.
Thus, they will create a joint, named cross halving joint.
In this way, students can make a cross-halving joint in a Carpentry shop and will be familiar with the different types of tools used in Carpentry shops.
Safety rules
- Always wear leather shoes, not sandals.
- Don’t wear loose clothes, or a wristwatch during the job.
- Know the correct way of holding the rip saw.
- File properly in a straight way.
- Keep patience while chiseling the cutting edges.
