Habitat
The earth is the habitat of all the living creatures. The area where the animals live is called habitat.
Habitats provide food and shelter to the animals.
Types of Habitats
The habitats are of five types. They are:
- Forest
- desert
- ocean, seas
- fresh water
- mountain tops and polar regions.
Examples of habitats
Forests

Lion, tiger, bear, bat,etc stay in den/cave in the jungle. So den/cave is the habitat of these animals.
Rabbit,rats,snakes,earthworms,etc live inside the burrows.
Monkeys and different types of birds live on trees in a forest.
Desert

Sandy and dry region is known as Desert where very little rainfall occurs. Here, days are hot and nights are cold. Animals live here have special features so that they can survive in such hot climate.
The animals here sweat very much. To avoid water loss, they have thick skin. Some animals hide in the burrows due to hot climate.
Example:
Camel,bandicoot,scorpion,etc
Ocean, seas:
An ocean is a large water body. The water tastes salty.
Ocean is the largest habitat on the Earth. Two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered with oceans.
Example:
Seal,whale,octopus,dolphin,seahorse,shark, jellyfish,etc.
Fresh water bodies:
Fresh water bodies are found in rivers, lakes, ponds, etc.
Example:
Duck,fish,frog,crane,salamander,swan.
Mountain tops and polar region:
The top of mountains and the polar regions are very cold as these regions are covered with snows.
The Arctic and Antarctica are the region near the North pole and South pole of the Earth. These are the polar regions.
The animals live here have special features to survive in the cold climate. Their bodies are covered with fur due to which they keep themselves warm.
Example:
Walrus, polar bear, Penguins, seal, etc.
Breathing organs in Animals
The process by which carbon dioxide, water, and energy are produced is called Respiration. This process is of two categories:
External Respiration
In this process, animals inhale oxygen and exhale carbon di oxide. This is also called as breathing.
Internal Respiration
In this process, the cells use the oxygen in the chemical reactions.
Breathing organ- Lungs
Respiratory system through lungs occur in amphibians, birds and mammals.
Breathing organ- Gills
- Aquatic animals like fish and prawns breathe through gills.
- Gills contain blood vessels.
- These vessels help in breathing.
Breathing organ- Tracheal system
- There are fine tubes in insects like cockroaches, butterflies.
- These tubes help in breathing.
- The exchange of gases through these tubes is called the Tracheal system.
Breathing organ-Body wall or Skin
- Some animals use their skin in exchanging the gases.
- The skin is very thin.
- Many blood cells are there on the skin.
- The skin should not be dry.
- When the skin becomes dry, they feel suffocation.
- This is the reason they stay in wet spaces.
- Example: Tapeworms, earthworms, and leeches
Breathing organ- many
Some animals such as frogs use more than one organ to breathe. Tadpoles use gills for breathing whereas frogs exchange the gases through their skin and breathe through the lungs.
Body covering of Animals
Body covering plays an important role in all animals’ lives. All animals except the human beings can’t wear the dresses as per weather requirement to protect themselves.
They don’t need any dresses for protection from cold, hot, snow, etc. They always need protection. This is the reason, they are equipped with body coverings.
The different types of body coverings are:
Fur
Example- Polar bear, dog, Ship, etc.
Feathers
Example- Birds, Penguins, etc.
Scales
Example- Fishes, snakes, etc.
Eating habits of Animals
Depending on the eating habits, animals are classified into four categories:
Herbivores
The animals who eat only plants are herbivores animals. Example: cow, goat, sheep, etc
Carnivores
The animals who eat only the meat of other animals are carnivores animals. Example: Tiger, lion, wolf, etc.
Omnivores
The animals who eat both the meats of other animals and plants are omnivores animals. Example: bears, crows, etc.
Scavengers
The animals who eat dead and leftover animals are called scavengers. Example: vultures, jackals, etc.
Movement of Animals from one place to another
Movement of some animals are self propelled. Different types of movements are:
- Walking
- Running
- Jumping
- Flying
- Hopping
- Gliding
Movement of some animals depend on the environment such as kiting by spiders, rolling by some beetles, sailing by jelly fish, etc.
Migration of Animals

Migration of some animals is due to the change in environment.
Example: Locusts and monarch butterflies migrate large distances. Every winter, Siberian cranes come to India for breeding.
